The 3 Basic Web-Lessons Most Local Business Owners Desperately Need.

I’m going to show you how to move your under-performing website from, “Uh, nice website,” to look out, the flood gates of profit are open.

Listen, if you’re a business owner and you don’t need more customers, click back to Google and search for some mind numbing game to play. Ok, if you want more customers then just keep reading. Just don’t tell your competitors about this.

Does your website suck? Is it making money or costing you money?

You’re looking for more customers and more revenue for your business, good then don’t despair. Here are 3 of the fundamental ways I use to help even clueless rookies turn their web sites around, literally overnight.

To begin with, I’m going to tell you about a very embarrassing secret that all marketing people know: a crappy website that reaches the right target market will do better than a brilliantly-flashy website that reaches the wrong market.

You’re saying, “Well, Duh.” Right mate, but check it out. I’m telling you, it’s stupid to try to sell ice to Eskimos and brilliant to sell ice water in the Kalahari Desert.

Local business owners make this mistake all the time. I can give you a hundred stories of business owners who’ve done it wrong.

Here’s a story of some business owners who did it right. Don’t you love stories with a happy ending.

Becky and Dave had an idea for a breakfast restaurant. Restaurants have the highest mortality rate of any local business. Everyone thinks their family recipes will sell like crazy, totally not true. So anyway, they opened a breakfast joint. They had really good traffic at first like all restaurants do. Then they became marketing geniuses.

I told them to ask their customers what they wanted. You don’t think this is smart? When was the last time you asked your customers what they want? Today I hope. They asked.

Their customers said, “A cheap breakfast.” So, on Monday through Thursday you can get a $5 Full-On breakfast or lunch. I am talking a huge, bacon, eggs, hash browns, pancakes all the trimmings breakfast, too much to eat. They’re opening a second location. They asked their customers what they wanted and the customers told them and then Dave and Becky delivered. Success.

How did they do it you ask? I showed them how to collect the names and email addresses of Everyone who came into their restaurant. Then we sent them emails, never selling the customers, just connecting on a personal basis. Their customers are now family, and family sticks with you no matter what, especially when breakfast is five bucks.

Don’t You be one of the 16 other restaurants in their area closed during this last year. Yeah, I know, you’re not a restaurant, just don’t be a business that has to shut down.

Now, you’ve got a website so you know you’ve got some kind of a target market (I hope.)

Here are 3 Simple Things You Can Do To Dramatically Improve Your Sales Now:

First Web-Lesson: Get rid of all your flashy dancing graphics.

This is going to cause your geeky webmaster to grab their chest and complain of a false heart attack. “Kill the dancing flash logo and WHAT remove the Movie? Are you insane? That’s the coolest part of my website,” they will moan. Uh, it’s not “their” website, it’s yours and you want it to get more customers and make money.

It can take up to 60 seconds for that kind of page to load onto your customers computer, they will NOT wait, I’m serious. YOU don’t wait for that kind of stuff, why should your customers? This is like a salesperson standing in front of you and clearing their throat for 2 minutes. Who’s got time for this silliness? You don’t and neither do your customers.

Web-Lesson Number Two: The most successful sites in the World – and I know things about successful websites – that even other top internet marketers aren’t hip to, are the most simple and obvious.

These sites are a simple Sales Letter. You’re thinking, “Oh c’mon.” And IF you’re sitting there thinking, “Huh, what’s that look like?” This site is a simple and obvious sales letter. I’m writing a letter to you telling you about You and Your Business and How to Get More Sales and Make More Money.

Is it Suicide for You to Try to Sell Something From Your Website?

All kinds of people from all over have said, “Long copy does not work.” These people claim that “the internet is different. People on the web have miniscule attention spans. People on the web click away if something doesn’t explode on their screen.”

Oh yeah? That’s BS.

Listen, this has been tested with millions, and I mean that seriously – millions of people.

Result. Long copy has always out performed all other versions when it comes to sales, revenue, money. Compelling and detailed sales copy that is passionately written with one Secret and Magic Ingredient, personality. That’s the Ultimate Secret to this, personality. Only 1 in a thousand copywriters can capture your personality.

Web-Lesson Number 3: If you put links that lead people OFF your page, guess what? They will click and GO OFF YOUR PAGE.

Please, no blue links on your home page that take people off your home page. Yes, you can put links that take them to somewhere else on YOUR website, at STRATEGIC spots on your page.

My brother had 15 links that took people from his page to his buddies page. We killed them and guess what, he got more sales. I know, “Duh” who’s the genius here?

Ok, There’s your 3 Basic Web-Lessons. Implement them and Prosper, really.

Good on you. There’s more to this whole internet thing than that. If you want to do more and you don’t want to implement those 3 Lessons by yourself, do yourself a favor, call me. Yes, you can email me too. Yep, just give me a call, I’ll talk to you and you and I will figure out how we can get you more customers and how your business will make more money.

I’m serious about this. You are too, you own a business.

Let’s Move Your Underperforming Web Site From “Uh, Nice Web Site” To Stand Back – The Floodgates of Profit Are Finally Open.

3 True stories:

1) Karl owns a print business. He does not have a store front because he prints large quantities of one or two color projects. His specialty is forms and envelopes that a business needs right away and in a large quantity. When the recession hit Karl’s business got hurt quite badly. Fortunately Karl had kept the contact information of every client he’d ever worked with. This included about 1,400 email addresses. Karl was quite adamant that he was not and could not call all of the people on this list. We developed a series of 12 emails. Each of these emails had a helpful tip, trick or some educational material. None of the emails had a direct “pitch, special offer or sales offer.” All of the emails did stress how other businesses were using printing to not only get past this recession but to make more money and be more profitable. Karl did over $220,000 in one month from contact past clients with helpful information. Several clients called him and said, “We’d forgotten how good your prices are and what a good job you do.”

2) Vanessa is a Realtor in Colorado. Right from the beginning she knew that staying in touch with past clients was good business. Because she had always used a printed newsletter and had written thank you notes she needed some help getting her list put together. After her list was updated we re-built her web page with her most recent listings. This included great photographs and even a video “walk through” of some really nice houses. In her emails and on her special web pages she wrote, “You’re probably very happy in your home and I want to say again how happy I am to have helped you. You might know someone who is looking for a fantastic deal in these troubling times and that is exactly what these houses are, they are great buys. If you know someone who would like to upgrade or get a really good deal please forward this page on to them. I will be very grateful to you’ll be helping someone you know.” Vanessa made 2 sales and got 2 listings from this effort.

3) Angela owns a very special pet food store. She competes with the “Big Box” businesses as well as several local businesses. It isn’t much competition though. Angela loves what she does and she loves animals and wants to know that they are being well taken care of and getting healthy food. Angela was already sending out one email a week to her clients and past clients. We brainstormed and came up with the “Cute Pet Photo of the Week Contest.” “Take a photo with your cell phone, your digital camera or whatever and send it to us. We will put up all the photo’s we get that week. You all get to vote on these photos and we will ask the students at local schools to vote. The winner gets some wonderful prizes.” Angela got over 10,000 hits on her website, there were over 50 photos per month in the contest and she donated some really great stuff to the elementary school classes that participated in this effort. She sold over $59,000 worth of pet food and products more than the year before, during this “worst recession in modern history.”

Contact your past clients, use the internet and make it work for you and for your business.

Goofy information on the internet? “No Way!” Uh, Way.

There’s a lot of really goofy information out on the internet about how bricks and mortar businesses, those businesses that are sometimes referred to as a Mom-And-Pop business should market themselves on the internet. An entire industry has grown up around the idea of, “Offline Internet Marketing.” This is the idea that businesses that don’t sell primarily on the internet should have a presence (website, blog, Twitter, Facebook and on and on) and do some marketing on the internet.

Where Do People Look for YOUR Business?

This is a great idea for one important and critical reason, 94% of people look for and research a business to buy from on the internet. So your presence on the internet could influence someone to come into your shop and buy from your business. Before you hire an Internet Marketing Specialist please read this article about the Egregious Errors that many of these specialists commit.

Egregious Error # 1: The primary job of an Internet Marketing Specialist is to drive traffic to a website and then improve conversion rates, (meaning converting the people that visit your website into buyers.)

Correction #1: The primary job of in Internet Marketing Specialist is to find out what your goals are. You may want a campaign that will enhance your image, OR make you the top of mind choice in your area OR get you more customers. None of these things may have anything whatsoever to do with driving traffic to your website or “conversion rates.” Or any other mumbo-jumbo they spout.

Egregious Error # 2: Internet Marketing Specialists should write copy that closes sales.

Correction # 2: The best Internet Marketing Specialists in the world might not be able to write one word of copy that will close a sale. The best specialist will have a list of the greatest copywriters on the internet and be able to call one of these people to write you outstanding copy that will accomplish your goals. Again we go back to, “What is it that you, as the business owner want to accomplish?” You want more sales, I’ve got just a guy that can write your copy and accomplish that.

Egregious Error # 3: Enormous amounts of traffic must result in sales and revenue.

Correction # 3: Your object as a business owner, doing marketing on the internet, might be to gather the names and e-mail addresses of several thousand people and then develop a relationship with them. This very well could be the most “long-term” beneficial and greatest revenue producing strategy for your business. This has been proven time and time again to be a most excellent business building strategy.

Bonus Egregious Error: “With desire, drive, time and perseverance, just about anyone can become an internet marketing specialist.” This is about the most stupid thing that’s ever been written on the internet, and there are a lot of stupid things that have been written on the internet. Here’s how stupid it is, “With desire, drive, time and perseverance just about anyone can become an… insert anything in the world here… example, ‘brain surgeon,’ ‘pilot of a 747,’ ‘greatest heart surgeon in the world.’ You can see just how really stupid that sentences is.

Do you really want to be a marketing specialist? (Please believe me, your Mother does not want you to be this.) Don’t you really just want to be successful at your business? A dear and wonderful friend of mine says, “I don’t want to know anything about marketing, I’m an Orthodontist. I just want to straighten kids teeth and make them feel wonderful.”

Business Owners are Smart

As a business owner you are one of the brightest, smartest and most astute persons on the face of this planet, truth. Please don’t get suckered in by somebody giving you a list of, “15 Skills and Talents You Need to Be in Internet Marketing Specialist.” What would your mother say if you suddenly told her, “Mom, I’m in internet marketing specialist.” She would scream in horror and ask you, “What happened to your dream of being a wonderful business owner.”

Whatever kind of business you run you can be almost 100% positive that an Internet Marketing Specialist is not going to have your skills, talents, and experiences and in no way could that specialist run your business and be successful.

Huge Information Coming At You

But, and this is absolutely HUGE, unless you were an one of these specialists in a former life this person is going to be able to give you the most valuable marketing plans, tactics, strategies, plans, marketing tips, marketing hints, marketing help and marketing information you could possibly want, and again this is HUGE, to accomplish YOUR goals. The information they give you should help you get more customers, OR improve the image of your business, OR accomplish whatever goal on the internet OP off the internet that will benefit your business.

What You Say to Them

WHEN you choose the best specialist for your business, choose the one who asks, “What are YOUR goals?” If they don’t ask you that question tell them, “Thank you but we’re not interested.”

The objective here is not to be an internet marketing specialist, the objective here is to accomplish the goals that are going to help your business be the most successful possible. Your business, your marketing goals, Your wildly successful business.

Get Some Help NOW!

There’s no reason you should have Marketing Problems with your business, contact me. There are marketing articles here on this blog, Special Reports and the contact page. Ask me a question, I will get back in touch with you. MY PHONE NUMBER is on my Contact Page, feel free to call me. If you want to get help and get answers to your marketing problems all you have to do is go to the contact page. Contact me, let’s get your business more customers.
